The year 2024 ended on a high note for Filipino actor and public servant Alfred, who made history by achieving a remarkable “three-peat” win as Best Actor for his role in the film “Pieta” at the Ima Wa Ima Asian International Film Festival in Osaka, Japan. This victory solidified his position as one of the Philippines’ most celebrated actors and marked a significant milestone in his career.
A Historic Win
Alfred’s journey to this triumph began with his powerful portrayal of a man entangled in a complex relationship with his mother, played by the legendary National Artist, Nora Aunor, in the suspense drama “Pieta.” The film, directed by Adolf Alix, also featured the talents of multi-awarded actress and director Gina Alajar.
This international recognition was not Alfred’s first for “Pieta.” He had already received Best Actor awards at the 72nd FAMAS Awards and the 3rd WuWei Taipei International Film Festival. However, the Ima Wa Ima Asian International Film Festival held special significance as it placed him in an elite group of actors who have achieved a “three-peat” win for a single film, joining the ranks of Piolo Pascual, Christopher de Leon, Allen Dizon, and Coco Martin.

The Ima Wa Ima Asian International Film Festival, organized by a coalition of Filipino, Korean, and Japanese organizations, aims to showcase the exceptional creativity and talent found across Asia. The Entertainment Special Awards, which include categories for film, television, and new media content, reflect this objective. The awards ceremony took place on December 1, 2024, at the Sumiyoshi Main Hall, a prestigious venue located within Osaka’s City Hall.

In his acceptance speech, Alfred expressed his humility and pride, acknowledging the contributions of the film’s cast and crew. He also thanked his wife and family for their unwavering support. A particularly touching moment occurred when Alfred invited his son, Cristiano, onto the stage. In a heartfelt message captured in viral videos, he dedicated the award to his son, encouraging him to pursue his dreams and to always remember the importance of helping those in need.
Beyond Best Actor
In addition to Alfred’s Best Actor award, “Pieta” also received recognition for its compelling narrative, with screenwriter Jerry Gracio winning the Best Screenplay award.
