Actress Angelica Panganiban has a strong perspective on the difficult journey of separation and annulment, emphasizing the importance of personal freedom. “If someone feels they need freedom, they should be allowed to pursue it without judgment or restriction,” she remarked, shedding light on a crucial theme in her latest film, “UnMarry,” featured at the Metro Manila Film Festival 2025. In the Philippines, where annulment is the only legal process to end a marriage, her insights are valid.

In “UnMarry,” Angelica reunites with co-stars Zanjoe Marudo and director Jeffrey Jeturian, their first collaboration since the 2019 series “Playhouse.” After an extended break from acting to focus on motherhood, Angelica is excited to make her return. The hiatus meant waiting for the perfect opportunity that justified spending time away from her family in Subic, including her husband, Gregg Homan, and their daughter, Amila Sabine.

When asked about her decision to join the film, a collaboration between Quantum Films and Cineko Films, Angelica shared that she felt drawn to the project even before reading the script. “It’s the trust in the makers of the film — the writer [Chris Martinez] and the director. Working with direk Jeffrey feels like being in a safe space,” she explained.

The film’s story got her with its blend of simplicity and complexity. She portrays Celine, a mother undergoing annulment, who meets Ivan (Zanjoe), facing a similar life situation. “This is not the typical love story we usually watch with so many fights and arguments. The film is quiet. Ang tahimik ng atake nung storytelling niya,” she shared. The film speaks to the realities of life where conflicts aren’t always loud.

Angelica’s partnership with Zanjoe further enhances the authenticity. Their shared experiences in marriage and parenthood foster a deeper understanding of familial pain. “Kung ano yung pinakamasakit na pwedeng pagdaanan pala ng isang pamilya,” she said, pointing to the maturity gained through their personal journeys. “Zanjoe takes his job seriously. He’s a deep person.”

“Of course, you couldn’t avoid feeling nervous. It’s a great feeling to be doing something that you are very passionate about,” Angelica said, referring to her comeback.

Reflecting on her time away from the screen, she clarified, “I just wanted to focus on being a mom.” Her journey of personal growth included hardships, including being diagnosed with vascular necrosis. Still, she remained patient, waiting for a project that ignited her passion.

As she steps back into the spotlight, Angelica Panganiban gives it her 100%. UnMarry opens in cinemas on Christmas Day.
