In Filipino heritage, music flows and connects generations through rhythm and emotion. One artist embodying this spirit is Celesst Mar, a Filipino-American singer-songwriter stepping into the spotlight with her debut album, “Fawn.” Born Ariana and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Celesst blends her background, emotions, and experiences into a deeply personal body of work.

At 26, Celesst defines herself as a “late bloomer,” having initially focused on her education in Communication and Political Science at California State University. Despite some doubts from those around her, she has embraced her passion for music with determination. “I never thought I would pursue music professionally,” she said during a press conference last month, reflecting on her transition. “Part of me wanted to work harder just for myself, so I can say I did it.”

Recently signed by Star Music under ABS-CBN, Celesst has created songs that speak vulnerability and authenticity. “Fawn” reflects on past relationships, emphasizing the tendency to prioritize others’ happiness over one’s own. “I think this album is very relatable. I hope it resonates with a lot of people,” she expressed.
The album features an array of tracks, with “Your Act” leading as an upbeat, pop-infused single. Celesst steers her sound toward R&B, offering a mix of ballads and emotional storytelling. Another standout track, “Siren’s Call,” draws inspiration from her love of the ocean, reflecting her experiences as an avid freediver. “I find peace and clarity in my underwater encounters,” she shared.

Themes of resentment and manipulation appear in other tracks such as “Revenge” and “Games.” The former addresses feelings of anger, while the latter highlights the emotional turmoil caused by manipulative relationships. Additionally, “Nonetheless” captures the essence of unrequited feelings, resonating particularly with Gen Z listeners.
Celesst’s musical influences include iconic artists like Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande, and Patti LaBelle. “Not every artist writes their own music. I will write all my songs from now on,” she said, committed to expressing her own voice and stories. She also embraces her Filipino roots, considering a move to Manila to immerse herself in the culture and improve her craft.

In addition to her artistic aspirations, Celesst emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself amidst the challenges of the music industry. “Everybody is on their own journey,” she reflected. She recognizes that growth is a continuous process and said, “There’s always room to improve vocally, always a learning process. I’m still figuring it out, and I’m very critical of myself.” This self-awareness not only showcases her dedication to honing her craft but also inspires aspiring musicians to pursue their dreams with authenticity and resilience.
The influence of her Filipino heritage also pervades her work, as Celesst strives to incorporate cultural elements into her music. She recalls fond memories of family gatherings filled with song and dance, reveling in the communal spirit that defines Filipino celebrations. “Music is a natural part of our culture,” Celesst pointed out, “It connects us, tells our stories, and preserves our history.” This connection drives her desire to create music that showcases both her Filipino roots and experiences in America.

Celesst dreams of collaborating with fellow artists, both local and international, to create culturally rich and diverse music. “I want my music to bridge gaps and bring people together,” she asserted, declaring her mission to contribute to a future where her melodies are heard across the world.
