John Rey Malto’s journey into the entertainment industry started with his work as a handler for models and beauty queens in 2018, the same year he was appointed Director of the Philippines’ International Modeling Competition. From a young age, he knew he wanted to pursue a career in entertainment, exploring interests in television production, songwriting, and photography. To support himself during those formative years, he took on freelance research and writing gigs, fueled by his passion for the industry.
A Heart Driven to Help Artists
Malto emphasizes that not all talent managers are destined for great wealth; many, including himself, are driven by a desire to support and nurture artists facing rejection. To him, these artists become family, and safeguarding them is a top priority in his work. His motivation stems from a genuine wish to see his talents succeed and feel protected in a competitive industry.
A Pivotal Encounter Sparks His Dream
Malto’s journey gained momentum after a chance meeting at a Department of Education festival in Abra. There, he met actor Rolando Inocencio and documentary director Dexter Macaraeg, who inspired him to persevere. Rolando recognized his potential in managing models in Baguio and La Union and encouraged him to pursue greater opportunities in Manila. Taking this advice to heart, Malto moved to the capital, driven by the faith these mentors had in him.
Expanding Opportunities During Challenging Times
Living in Metro Manila opened new doors, allowing Malto to diversify his career into songwriting and event planning. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he continued managing his talents while branching into advertising to promote both his career and emerging artists, demonstrating resilience and adaptability.
Mentoring Talents on Major Platforms
Malto has successfully guided artists through various ABS-CBN talent competitions like “Tawag ng Tanghalan,” “The Voice Kids,” “It’s Showtime,” and “Idol Philippines.” He received mentorship from Luis Yu, ABS-CBN’s Head of Research and Contestant Coordinator. Notable mentees under his guidance include Shyr Balagtas, Kristel Millado, and Ma. Cristel Antibo, among others, who have made their mark on national television.
Discoveries and New Horizons with GMA Network
Beyond ABS-CBN, Malto has also helped talents break into GMA Network. He discovered Liana Mae and Monaliza El Hallani, introducing them to the GMA Artist Center (now Sparkle GMA Artist Center) through talent scout Patrick Tugade. His current roster boasts a diverse lineup of promising artists eager to make their mark in the entertainment industry.
Passionate about Inspiring Stories
For Malto, every artist’s story is a source of inspiration. He considers himself emotionally moved when talents share their journeys, often signing them immediately if their stories resonate. He believes that relatable and inspiring stories are what audiences now seek most in their entertainers.
Expanding Skills in Film and Casting
In 2023, Malto further developed his craft as a filmmaker’s apprentice at MUD Studios, working alongside acclaimed directors Arvin Belarmino, August Lyle Espino, and Kyla Romero. He also served as Casting Director for two international films, “Spring in Prague” and “The Mariana’s Web,” working with talents like Sara Sandeva and Paolo Gumabao, broadening his expertise in casting and filmmaking.
Current Role and Future Goals in Talent Scouting
Today, Malto is a talent scout for Viva Entertainment’s “Artista Academy,” a reality TV show set to air on TV5. His overarching goal remains finding and nurturing hidden talents, giving new artists a platform to shine. He emphasizes the importance of education, patience, and perseverance, urging artists to balance their studies with their passions while never giving up on their dreams.
Advocating for Sustainable Tourism and Community Development
Malto also passionately supports sustainable tourism initiatives through his involvement with the International Ecotourism Society Philippines Inc. (TIES Ph Inc.). He believes in using ecotourism to conserve biodiversity, protect cultural heritage, and support local communities, contributing to meaningful environmental and social change.
Educational Pursuits and Continual Growth
In 2017, Malto earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University. He further pursued studies in photography at Lorma Colleges and examined Public Administration for his Master’s degree at the same university, although he did not complete it. Recently, in 2023, he expanded his skills by studying Event Management at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Quezon City, illustrating his ongoing commitment to personal and professional growth.
