After years of dedication and passion, the highly anticipated meta-docu-fiction “Lakambini: Gregoria de Jesus” is set to empower Filipina women this November!
Starring Lovi Poe as Gregoria de Jesus, the film also features Rocco Nacino as Andres Bonifacio, with special appearances from the late Spanky Manikan (+), Paulo Avelino as Julio Nakpil, and the versatile Ms. Gina Pareno.
This groundbreaking production pays tribute to the courage, intellect, and enduring spirit of Filipina women through the lens of Katipunan’s own Lakambini. Its release coincides with the 150th birth anniversary of Gregoria “Ka Oriang” de Jesus, commemorated last May 9, 2025.
Lakambini: Gregoria de Jesus masterfully blends history and creative storytelling, incorporating herstory, in-depth interviews, anecdotes from historians and descendants, and the unfinished biographical film shot in 2015. It offers a compelling cinematic view of her life and legacy.
Lovi Poe shared her preparation for the role, “Sa pelikulang ito, ikinagagalak ko po na napili akong gumanap. Sobra ang aking tutok, panay ang rehearsal, pero sigurado akong magugustuhan ninyo ang pelikula.”
According to the film’s creative producer, Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil, the idea dawned 12 years ago during the 150th anniversary of Andres Bonifacio. She realized that, despite numerous historical films, women were often absent from the narrative. She then took it upon herself to study Gregoria de Jesus, recognizing her vital role in Philippine history. “Sa dami ng mga pelikulang historical, naisip ko na parang laging lalaki ang nangunguna, pero hindi ba kasama ang kababaihan sa pagbubuo ng bayan? That’s when I started to research Gregoria de Jesus,” she said.
With support from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), the film serves as a vital cultural and educational tribute, honoring Gregoria de Jesus as the Mother of the Philippine Revolution. “When NHCP partnered with us, I was so thankful. I didn’t realize she would be commemorated this year. After 128 years, it’s truly meaningful. She was only 22 in 1897, so I feel it’s all intentional,” Ellen shared.
Rocco Nacino reflected on his preparation, noting how his features align with native Filipino traits: “Most of my previous projects involved period roles, so I believe my features are naturally Filipino.” Having grown up in Singapore, he appreciates how portraying Filipino historical figures has deepened his understanding and love for Philippine history. “It’s helped me adapt and appreciate our culture. Doing these projects makes me love our history more comfortably,” he said.
As Lakambini: Gregoria de Jesus prepares to premiere on November 5, it aims to go beyond its historical roots, serving as a celebration of courage, resilience, and the empowerment of Filipino women. The film sends a powerful message to today’s youth. The story of our nation was built not only by men but also by the strength and courage of women.
