In May 2020, at the height of the pandemic my first Zoom meeting was with Matteo Guidicelli for a ranger documentary, an experience that left a lasting impression of his genuine dedication and humility. Now, in 2025, I have the opportunity to reflect on his latest project, “PHILIPPINE DEFENDERS,” a powerful documentary that highlights the bravery of Filipino soldiers. This documentary not only showcases his personal involvement but also offers a compelling look into the sacrifices made by those who serve our country.

Today, May 17, 2025, GMA Public Affairs will premiere “PHILIPPINE DEFENDERS,” a documentary that sheds light on the bravery and sacrifices of Filipino soldiers who risk their lives in service of the nation. Led by 2LT Matteo Guidicelli, a reservist since 2019, the film offers an intimate account of both his personal experiences and the efforts of the men and women in uniform who dedicate their lives to safeguarding the Philippines.
Guidicelli, who has expressed a deep desire to tell the stories of the soldiers, describes his journey as a goal fulfilled. “I’ve always told myself and the soldiers that have already become family, I’ll never be like one of them, but my dedication and my vow to them is that I will always tell their story,” he shares ahead of the documentary’s debut.
His participation involved engaging in high-stakes operations with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), including boarding a military aircraft for an aerial patrol that surveys Chinese vessels encroaching upon Philippine waters. He’s also part of the AFP’s Rotation and Resupply Mission (RORE), delivering crucial supplies to soldiers stationed on disputed islands—a task that he describes as both challenging and eye-opening.
Experiencing the Frontline
Guidicelli recounts his first experience in the West Philippine Sea, witnessing the Chinese vessels slowly edging into Philippine territory. “It’s hard to believe that these large Chinese vessels are slowly creeping up into our shores. Our men and women are there establishing their presence, but they need more exposure. Kawawa din sila eh. If you see their supplies…what they do has to be given more importance. I hope after this docu, people will start giving more attention to the soldiers who are there,” he emphasizes. His account underscores the critical yet often overlooked realities faced by Filipino troops defending their homeland.
Beyond the sea, the documentary offers an inside look into the Presidential Security Command (PSC), the specialized unit responsible for protecting the President of the Philippines. At Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija, home to the Special Forces Regiment (Airborne), Guidicelli undergoes rigorous military training, including a live parachute jump—an experience he admits to cherishing. “I used to be afraid of heights. When I did the airborne course, I really wanted to face my fears,” he explains. Having completed five civilian skydiving jumps and six military jumps, he describes the airborne experience as “an amazing feeling that I don’t take for granted,” highlighting his personal growth through facing fears and embracing challenge.
Stories of Resilience and Sacrifice
Guidicelli’s encounters also include meeting soldiers who endured the Marawi Siege—a conflict that tested the resilience of the Filipino military. These warriors, despite losing limbs, found the strength to recover and continue serving with honor. The stories are profoundly compelling, reminding viewers of the resilience required in their line of duty. “Seeing footage in the trailer from the Marawi siege is hair-raising for me, because I know some of these soldiers—I’ve heard their stories, I’ve spoken to them, I know their sacrifices. It’s really mind-blowing, and yet sometimes we take that for granted,” says Guidicelli.
A Shared Responsibility
Throughout the documentary, Guidicelli emphasizes that the story of a soldier extends beyond the battlefield. “Aside from them, if we think hard about who really are the Philippine defenders — it is us, ordinary citizens,” he asserts. “We are responsible for upholding and defending our country in our own little ways.” This reminder calls on Filipinos to recognize their role in national security, fostering a collective sense of responsibility.
The GMA team behind this project aimed to portray the true motivations and sacrifices of the soldiers, emphasizing that their reasons for serving vary—from providing a better life for their families to defending their country. Guidicelli notes, “This is not at all political. This is straight, direct serving the Filipino people. Gusto namin ipakita ang hirap nila, yung sakripisyo ng bawat sundalo, their reasons for choosing to become a soldier. They have varied reasons: to give a better life for their families, for the country. Different stories, yet all very touching.”

The documentary’s narrative is a potent reminder of the bravery and commitment embedded within the Armed Forces, with Guidicelli’s insights fostering a broader understanding of what it means to be a defender. “PHILIPPINE DEFENDERS” aims to honor those who serve while also inspiring ordinary citizens to reflect on their role in national security.
