Twenty-five years have passed since the chilling events in Basilan, when the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) seized hostages, including Claretian priest Father Rhoel Gallardo, plunging their lives into a nightmare. Now, a new film, “In Thy Name,” directed by Ceasar Soriano and co-directed by Rommel Galapia Ruiz, offers a powerful account of those 45 days of captivity, culminating in the decisive battle between the military and the ASG. The film, starring Mccoy De Leon as Father Rhoel, brings to life the harrowing experiences of the hostages and the unwavering faith that sustained them.

Father Rhoel, born in 1965 and ordained in 1994, was a man of quiet strength, known for his gentle humor and deep commitment to service. Despite the known dangers, he volunteered for a parish in Basilan, vowing, “I will never leave my flock no matter what.” His resolve would be tested beyond imagination.

“In Thy Name” delves into the complex motivations of the ASG leaders. JC De Vera portrays Khadaffy Janjalani, who assumed leadership after his brother’s death, driven by a fierce desire to establish an Islamic state. His animosity towards Christianity, evident in his treatment of Father Rhoel, forms a stark contrast to the priest’s unwavering devotion. Mon Confiado plays Abu Sabaya, the ASG spokesperson, notorious for his cruelty. It is said that Abu Sabaya “took an interest in one of the teachers they held hostage,” adding another layer of tension to the already volatile situation.

The film also shines a light on the courage of those who fought to free the hostages. Jerome Ponce plays Second Lieutenant Herbert Dilag, the 23-year-old who volunteered to lead the “Suicide Squad” to attack the ASG camp. Yves Flores portrays First Lt. Andrew Bacala, the 24-year-old commanding officer who led the rescue mission as the ASG attempted to escape with their captives.

Among the hostages were ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances. Soliman Cruz plays Principal Rey Rubio, Father Rhoel’s confidant, whose wisdom and kindness provided solace amidst the terror. Aya Fernandez plays Teacher Theresa, a nurturing young woman who risked her own safety to protect her students. Kenken Nuyad plays Reylios, a young boy who looked up to Father Rhoel, finding comfort in his presence. Cassy Lavarias plays Emylin, a young girl who acted as a beacon of hope for the other child hostages.

Alex Medina plays Teacher Rosebert, who, despite the grim reality, offered moments of levity, sharing stories of his love for his wife, Teacher Lydda, played by Elora Españo. Kat Galang plays Teacher Anabelle, whose quiet strength emerged when her friend was taken by Abu Sabaya.

The film features a large ensemble cast, including Ynez Veneracion, Martin Escudero, JM Soriano, Ana Abad Santos, Richard Quan, Gold Aceron, Aaron Villaflor, Pen Medina, and John Estrada.

“In Thy Name,” produced by GreatCzar Media Productions, explores themes of faith, peace, and heroism. Father Rhoel’s constant prayer during captivity, a testament to his unwavering belief, is a central element of the story, as seen in the movie’s teaser. Even in the face of unimaginable hardship, he surrendered “everything to the mercy of God.”

“In Thy Name” is a powerful and timely film, opening in cinemas nationwide this Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025, during the Jubilee Year of Hope.
