Review by Sandy Cagurangan

Random Republika was invited to attend the advance screening of “No Other Choice” on October 23, 2025, at SM The Block, Quezon City. The film features an impressive Korean cast, including Lee Byung-Hun, Son Hye Jin, Park Hee Soon, Lee Sung Min, Yeom Hye Ran, and Cha Seung-Won, delivering powerful performances that bring the story to life.

The story follows Yoo Man-su, portrayed by Lee Byung-Hun, a seasoned paper industry expert with 25 years of experience who lives a happy life with his wife Mi-ri, their two children, and their two dogs. Everything seems perfect until he is suddenly laid off by his longtime employer, shattering his sense of stability. Faced with mounting financial pressures and the threat of losing his hard-earned home, Man-su vows to secure a new job within three months to ensure his family’s well-being. However, despite his determination, he ends up working a dead-end job, bouncing from one interview to another for over a year, feeling increasingly desperate.

In his desperation, Man-su seeks out Moon Paper, a rival company, and submits his résumé, only to be humiliated by the foreman. Convinced that he is the perfect fit for the job and fueled by a mix of frustration and pride, he makes a dark decision: to eliminate his competition. His plan spirals into a dangerous game, revealing a chilling side of a man pushed to the edge, and raising questions about morality, desperation, and societal pressures.

Beyond its compelling and suspenseful plot, “No Other Choice” offers a touching exploration of a family’s struggle amid economic hardship. It also touches on modern issues like the impact of advancing AI technology and automation on employment and personal lives, injecting social relevance into its narrative.

What I genuinely loved about the film is its exceptional cinematography and high-quality execution. The storytelling is both creative and engaging, with twists that keep viewers intrigued and surprised as the story unfolds. Although I initially anticipated a straightforward suspense thriller, the film surprisingly incorporates moments of humor, largely thanks to the natural and amusing performances of the cast, providing a nuanced viewing experience.

Each actor delivered their roles with remarkable depth, giving authenticity and emotional weight to the story. Despite its dark themes, the film ultimately offers important moral lessons, prompting viewers to reflect on the societal and personal impacts of economic upheaval and technological advancement.

Overall, “No Other Choice” is a well-made film that blends thriller, emotion, and social commentary, making it a highly recommended movie.
